Affalé dans le canapé de la suite 111 du Beverly Hills Hotel à Hollywood, les yeux dans le vague, Rob Pattinson est visiblement fatigué. La faute à une fête qui s’est prolongée la veille. Il accueille néanmoins ses hôtes avec égard et sincérité en bondissant d’un coup sur ses pieds. Casquette de baseball à l’envers, chemisette noire, jeans et baskets, Coca Light à la main, Robert Thomas Pattinson n’a que très peu de choses à voir avec Edward Cullen, son avatar cinématographique de la série Twilight. À 27 ans, Rob est plus qu’un simple acteur anglais qui a conquis Hollywood, ou même une quelconque star internationale de série TV. Ce Londonien réservé, cultivé et élégant est devenu une icône planétaire adulée par des millions de fans. Un statut confortable mais temporaire – et surtout extrêmement encombrant – que le comédien fait évoluer petit à petit et très intelligemment : rôles à contre-emploi (Bel Ami d’après Maupassant, The Rover de David Michôd), adoption d’un « père » de cinéma en la personne de David Cronenberg (Cosmopolis en 2012 et un nouveau film en préparation) et entrée remarquée dans le monde de la mode cet automne en devenant la nouvelle égérie des parfums Dior Homme. Un faisceau d’indices concordants qui nous dit qu’il ne faut pas passer à côté de Rob Pattinson quand on s’appelle SportetStyle. Quand vous êtes-vous aperçu de votre intérêt pour la comédie et du potentiel d’expression qu’elle représente ?J’ai commencé tardivement dans un club de théâtre car j’étais très timide enfant. Ça a été révélateur : c’était la première fois que je me confrontais à mes peurs et la montée d’adrénaline a été intense. Ensuite, il y a eu la première fois où j’ai eu le sentiment de « bâtir » quelque chose. C’était pour Little Ashes en 2008, un film assez étrange où je jouais Salvador Dalí. Je tenais beaucoup à la crédibilité du personnage et donc de ma prestation.
Vous avez aussi été musicien ?À l’origine, je voulais être musicien. Cela a d’ailleurs été le cas jusqu’à Twilight. À cette époque, je tournais avec un groupe dans les pubs autour de Londres. On jouait du folk-pop mais j’ai toujours été plus soul – Otis Redding, Van Morrison – que vraiment folk.
C’est quoi l’élégance pour vous en tant qu’acteur ?C’est sûrement une affaire d’équilibre entre le magnétisme, l’aura, le comportement, la gestuelle, l’allure. Mais l’élégance c’est aussi l’écoute et la prise de parole.
Et le style ?C’est pour moi une façon de s’exprimer, ou plutôt un moyen d’expression. On perçoit souvent le style comme une sorte de cosmétique, une façon de se cacher dans un costume. Je trouve au contraire que le vrai style, c’est d’abord avoir une très bonne connaissance de qui on est et aussi beaucoup d’honnêteté envers soi-même.
Est-ce difficile de trouver de bons scenarios quand on est une superstar ?Oui, car il est difficile de savoir ce que le public perçoit de vous. Aujourd’hui, le public connaît beaucoup de choses sur les comédiens en dehors de leur métier. Le choix d’un scénario se fait sur l’intérêt intrinsèque du scénario, mais surtout sur ce qui relève presque d’un manifeste personnel : choisir ce personnage, c’est aussi moi !
Pourquoi avez-vous choisi The Rover de David Michod qui va bientôt sortir ? Pour aller a rebrousse-poil de votre image publique ?Probablement un peu, ça fait partie de l’équation. Je l’ai vraiment voulu, j’ai auditionné deux fois ! Le script était magnifique, je me suis accroché. L’histoire est fantastique, très originale, racontée de manière très novatrice. C’était quelque chose qui semblait très différent de tout le reste et je voulais être dedans.

When did you start to be interested by comedy and realize the expressive potential it represents?I started late in a drama club because I was a very shy child. It was a revelation: it was the first time I confront myself to my fears and the adrenaline rush was intense. Then, there was the first time I had the feeling to "build" something. It was for 'Little Ashes' in 2008, a weird film where I played Salvador Dalí. I really wanted to give credibility to this character and therefore to my performance.
You've also been a musician?At the beginning, I wanted to be a musician. It was still the case until Twilight. At that time, I was touring with a band in pubs around London. We were playing folk-pop but I've always preferred soul music more - Otis Redding, Van Morrison - than folk music.
What is elegance for you as an actor?It is surely a balance between magnetism, aura, behavior, gestures, look. But elegance is also being able to listen and to speak.
What about style?This is a way of expressing yourself, or rather a means of expression. Style is often viewed as a kind of cosmetic, a way of hiding yourself in a suit. On the contrary, i think that true style is first to have a good knowledge of who you are and also be very honest with yourself.
Is it difficult to find good scenarios when you are a superstar?Yes, because it's difficult to know how the audience see you. Today, people know a lot of things about the actors outside of their profession. The choice of scenario is made by the intrinsic interest of the script, but also on what is almost a personal manifesto: choosing this character, it's me too!
Why did you choose 'The Rover' by David Michod which will be released soon? To go in the opposite direction of your public image?Probably a little, it's part of the equation. I really wanted it, I auditioned twice! The script was wonderful, i worked hard. The story is fantastic, very original, told in a very innovative way. It was something that seemed very different from everything else and I wanted to be part of it
