Robert Pattinson, du vampire au meilleur
Avec notamment deux films en sélection officielle à Cannes, l'acteur gère sereinement «l'après-Twilight».
Sur une terrasse du Palais des festivals balayée par le vent, un homme, la tête rentrée dans les épaules, tire sur sa cigarette. Un garde du corps se tient à quelques mètres de lui. Le fumeur anonyme est Robert Pattinson. Avec deux films en sélection officielle, Maps to the Stars , de David Cronenberg, et The Rover, de David Michôd, l'acteur était l'une des attractions à Cannes. Quand on arrive à notre rendez-vous sur la Croisette, il n'a pas l'air très frais. La veille, il a fait la fermeture du Silencio, le club parisien délocalisé le temps du festival. Il s'est réveillé dix minutes avant ses rendez-vous avec la presse.
Il est fatigué et spontané, disposé à parler de ces deux cinéastes qui l'aident à enterrer sa vie de vampire sexy. Le héros de la saga Twilight paye d'abord sa dette au Canadien Cronenberg. Comme dans Cosmopolis, en 2012, Pattinson est à nouveau dans une limousine dans Maps to the Stars, mais cette fois au volant. «C'est un second rôle, mais j'ai dit oui avant même de lire le scénario. Je ferais n'importe quoi avec ce type.» Son personnage est un chauffeur de limousine à Hollywood qui se présente comme un «acteur écrivain». «J'ai eu tendance à dire ça au début mais plus maintenant», plaisante le Britannique installé à Los Angeles depuis plusieurs années déjà. «Londres me manquait beaucoup au début, mais la plupart de mes amis sont partis à leur tour et Los Angeles est une très belle ville, dynamique. Et en même temps très bizarre. Tout dépend des gens avec lesquels vous traînez…»
Plaisirs simples
À Hollywood, les scénarios et les cinéastes viennent à lui. C'est ainsi que David Michôd, dont Pattinson admire le premier film, Animal Kingdom, le rencontre et le choisit parmi des milliers d'acteurs. Pourquoi lui ? «Parce que son visage me fascine, il est à la fois beau et atypique», nous dira le réalisateur. L'acteur passe ainsi sept semaines dans le désert australien, à neuf heures de route de la première ville. Il goûte la solitude, un vrai luxe pour ce jeune homme de 28 ans harcelé par les paparazzis.
Après sa love story et sa rupture avec sa partenaire de Twilight, Kristen Stewart, qui en ont fait la proie préférée de la presse people, la star a redécouvert des plaisirs simples: «J'ai adoré pouvoir uriner tranquillement en pleine nature.» L'ancien mannequin a aussi apprécié de concasser un peu plus son image d'icône adolescente avec un personnage border line. «À la première lecture, je me suis demandé si ce type était handicapé mental. David Michôd m'a dit qu'il ne savait pas. J'ai fait d'ailleurs beaucoup d'improvisations, mais je crois qu'elles ont toutes été coupées!»
Depuis, Pattinson a tourné avec Werner Herzog et Anton Corbijn. Il est annoncé dans les prochains films de James Gray, Harmony Korine et Olivier Assayas. Il serait même l'un des prétendants au poste d'Indiana Jones, en remplacement de Harrison Ford. Un coup de fouet dont sa carrière n'a pas besoin.translation....

"I missed London at the beginning, but most of my friends left and Los Angeles is a beautiful city, dynamic. And at the same time very weird. All depends on the people you hang out with..."
Simple Pleasures

"At the first reading, I wondered if this guy was mentally handicapped. David Michôd told me he didn't know. I did a lot of improvisation to, but I think they have all been cut off!"
Since, Pattinson shot with Werner Herzog and Anton Corbijn. Upcoming films with James Gray, Harmony Korine and Olivier Assayas has been announced. He would even be one of the contenders for the part of Indiana Jones, as a replacement of Harrison Ford. A boost to his career which doesn't need one.
