“The Rover” (dir. David Michod)

Not every filmmaker can be a returning face at Cannes—everyone needs to make their Croisette debut at some point.One of the most likely to be headed to the South of France this year would appear to be Australian filmmaker David Michod, who announced himself as a major talent with “Animal Kingdom” a few years back. His latest, a moody post-apocalyptic Western with some serious star power attached, looks like potential Cannes territory, has been gently rumored for a while, and appears to be perfectly timed — it shot in January 2013, already has a teaser trailer out there, and will be released in the U.S. by A24 in July.

At this stage David Cronenberg is close to Cannes royalty, having been in Competition four times, winning the Jury Prize in 1995 for “Crash,” and picking up a Lifetime Achievement award in 2006. Indeed his last film, “Cosmopolis” (his first team-up with star Robert Pattinson who returns here in a pretty amazing ensemble) made it onto the Croisette in 2012 and this one has an even more appealing premise: it’s a twisted Hollywood story following two former child stars and their run-ins with drugs, pyromania and a movie star haunted by her dead mother. We’d say a competition slot is very likely.

In Robert Pattinson, David Cronenberg has seemingly found a potent new collaborator, and following Cosmopolis two years ago, this looks more than likely to fetch up on the Croisette. Taken from a script by Bruce “Wild Palms” Wagner, Maps to the Stars is apparently about “the convoluted world of shallow, selfish celebrities and their minions, all of whom are about to be manipulated and destroyed by the young woman who literally represents the fruit of their twisted machinations.” Joining Pattinson for Cronenberg’s special brand of lynx-eyed eccentricity – and also presumably on the Palais red carpet – are Julianne Moore, John Cusack and Mia Wasikowska. A near certainty for Cannes 2014, David Cronenberg's follow up to his divisive "Cosmopolis" once again teams the director with Robert Pattinson, this time alongside a dreamy ensemble including Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack, Olivia Williams and Carrie Fisher (as herself!). Said to be a "vicious look at a twisted Hollywood dynasty" and a takedown of the industry altogether, "Maps" sure sounds juicy. It's already been rated by the MPAA (and given an "R," which is clearly no surprise given Cronenberg's history), so it should be just a matter of waiting for Cannes to announce the lineup at this point.

Best known for “Animal Kingdom” -- the Australian crime drama that secured Jacki Weaver her first Oscar nomination -- David Michod once again uses his Australian background for “The Rover,” a futuristic crime drama with Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson (the latter of whom is quickly becoming the unexpected Prince of Cannes as of late). Pearce stars as Eric, a man who teams up with Rey (Pattinson), an injured criminal, to hunt down the gang that stole from him.A24 is releasing the film in America in June, and we're sure they'd love the profile Cannes would give them beforehand.
