Filming The Rover in a remote part of south Australia with cast and crew all staying in a local pub was just about perfect, says Robert Pattinson. The filmmakers all mucked in together, braved filming in soaring temperatures, and at night bonded over a drink or two. Pattinson wouldn’t have had it any other way and says that it helped director David Michôd and his cast and crew build an unbreakable bond.

“It was amazing,” he says. “Because the whole crew was staying in the same place and there was nothing else to do, we were living in a pub. It’s annoying if you’re in an unfamiliar city and all the people you work with are from that city, they all go home, so you’re just stuck in your hotel.

“When you can hang out with a bunch of new people, you get close to them really quickly, especially when there’s literally nothing else to do. It’s really fun. I hadn’t done that for a long time. I had a fantastic experience making this film.”

Pattinson was born and raised in London and started his professional career as a 16 year old in the TV film Ring of the Nibelungs. A year later, he played Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He starred in five, hugely successful Twilight films and his other film credits include Bel Ami and Cosmopolis.

Q: How’s it going? 

I always forget in the evening that I’ve got to do a bunch of interviews in the morning, so I stay out all night (laughs). It’s horrible! 

Q: How was shooting in rural Australia? 

For me it was really fun. It was kind of relaxing. I loved shooting out there. There was no pressure, and no one around. 

Q: Was it a relief getting away from people? 

Yeah, just in terms of performance. I like doing little things before a take, sort of staying in character a little bit, and if you’ve got a bunch of people trying to take pictures of you doing a stupid face or something, then you’ve just constantly got it in your head, and you’re never really quite in what you want to do. Out there you can kind of do anything you want. They might think you’re a weirdo, this guy doing all this weird stuff (laughs), but it was quite freeing. 

Q: Did you enjoy playing a less beautiful character? 

Yeah, I mean it takes away constraints. If someone’s saying, ‘You’ve got to look pretty!’ for one thing you feel like a bit of an idiot, because you’re a guy, and then you’re kind of thinking about stuff that really doesn’t mean anything – you’re just posing. As soon as you take away the allowance for your own vanity, then it’s kind of a relief. 

Q: How would you describe the themes of The Rover? 

I think it’s just a story about survivors. I think they’re quite simple people in extraordinary circumstances. They’re trying to figure out how to live when it seems like there’s not a lot of hope. It seems like there’s nothing to do tomorrow, so what are you supposed to do at any point during your day? Even the gang I’m in, they’re stealing money and there’s nothing to use the money for at all (laughs). Eric [Guy Pearce] says, ‘It’s worthless, it’s just paper.’ It’s very difficult to know why to keep living if everything seems totally worthless, and yet people do. 

Q: Are you happy at the place you’re at in your career? 

Definitely. I’m really happy these two films got into Cannes, it’s kind of exactly what I wanted. I am really happy with both the films as well. But it’s nice – I just get to work with people I’ve wanted to work with for years and years, and just been really lucky in the last year, with this really cool stuff 

Q: What’s happening with Life? 

I don’t know when it’s going to be finished. I just saw a trailer, which they’re playing here. Other than that, I haven’t seen anything from it. It was fun to do, though, and Anton [Corbijn]’s really cool. It’s about the famous photographs of James Dean in Times Square; it’s about James Dean and the photographer’s relationship. Joel Edgerton’s in it, weirdly because he’s a co-writer on The Rover, and Ben Kingsley. It’s cool. It’s interesting doing a movie about photography with Anton Corbijn, a master photographer. He taught me how to take photos a little bit, with an old Leica. They’re not very good. I thought they were all going to be absolutely amazing. I developed them all at the end of the movie and I did like 25 rolls of film, and on about four I hadn’t even realised that you need to pull the lens out (laughs) – so they’re all blank. Four films. It was a fun movie to do. 

Q: People called you the new James Dean. Now you’re doing a movie about James Dean, but not playing him. Weren’t you interested in that role? 

No, not really. Dane [DeHaan] is so brave doing it. It’s one of the hardest parts ever. Try and play any iconic person. Dane’s got a wig, fake earlobes, and contact lenses – the whole deal. And James Dean’s mannerisms are so recognisable, so you’ve got to play the part and all this other stuff. It’s like playing Harry Potter – everyone’s got expectations – whereas I’m just the observer 

Q: Are you enjoying the travelling? 

I’ve always kind of liked it: three months and then you can just move on, you don’t have any responsibility. I had a house for a bit, and then I literally just sold it recently. You’re never there, and it’s just a bit of a hassle. Unless you’ve got kids or something, it’s nice to be able to experience this stuff. I realised that I haven’t been anywhere, other than for work, in about ten years – no vacation or anything. You don’t really need to. By the end of the job I’m just constantly looking for the next one, but also I live in LA so it’s kind of just like you’re on holiday all the time (laughs). 

Q: When you have time for yourself, what do you do? 

When I’m not working I try to get another job (laughs), constantly. You start to realise there’s a finite amount of time to get stuff done, and there’s a lot of different things that I want to achieve, also I like working pretty much more than anything else in my life. My job is my hobby.

Robert Pattinson’s Star Continues to Soar 

Robert Pattinson first appeared on movie screens in the 2004 movie adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s “Vanity Fair” and began garnering attention with his portrayal of Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” However, it was not until the first “Twilight” movie was released in 2008 that Pattinson rose to the level of international heartthrob. The English actor was perfectly cast as Edward Cullen, the love interest of Bella Swan, and reprised the role in subsequent “Twilight” films. 

Since his appearance in “Twilight,” Pattinson has managed to defy expectations and continually impress critics with his choices in roles and his diverse acting chops. Around the same time as “Twilight,” Pattinson played a young Salvador Dali in “Little Ashes,” and in 2012, he played the lead role in “Cosmopolis,” a David Cronenberg-directed adaptation of a Don DeLillo novel. 

With the last “Twilight” installment well in the past, fans of Robert Pattinson may be wondering what is next for the rising star. The following films are a few of Pattinson’s upcoming projects. 

“The Rover”
Robert Pattinson has already appeared onscreen with some formidable acting talent, but “The Rover” finds Pattinson acting next to “L.A. Confidential” and “Memento” star Guy Pearce. An Australian crime picture that takes place in the near future, “The Rover” is a very interesting project equipped with high-wattage star power. The film was directed by David Michôd, who only has one feature-length credit under his belt, but that film happens to be the excellent crime thriller “Animal Kingdom.” “The Rover” debuts at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival before making its way to a U.S. release in June.

“Maps to the Stars”
After his intense turn as Eric Packer in “Cosmopolis,” Robert Pattinson will once again team up with Canadian director David Cronenberg for “Maps to the Stars.” This upcoming drama marks the second time in a row the director and actor have worked together, and is more evidence of Pattinson’s commitment to appearing in thought-provoking, quality pictures. “Maps to the Stars” promises to be a dark yet enlightening study on Hollywood’s relationship to culture in general. For this film, Pattinson will share the screen with other A-list luminaries such as Julianne Moore, Carrie Fisher and John Cusack. 

“Queen of the Desert”
Working with David Cronenberg on two projects in a row is one thing, but for “Queen of the Desert” Robert Pattinson teamed up with none other than German film legend Werner Herzog. For this movie, Herzog examines the multifaceted life of English archaeologist, spy and writer, Gertrude Bell. Pattinson plays British military officer, Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence, who was the inspiration for “Lawrence of Arabia.” While Peter O’Toole played the historical figure in that 1962 classic, Pattinson will portray him in “Queen of the Desert,” while sharing the screen with Nicole Kidman, Damian Lewis and James Franco. “Queen of the Desert” is set for a 2015 release. 

“Life”
“Life” was directed, appropriately enough, by Anton Corbijn, who began his career as a photographer and has captured an extensive range of musical artists from Joy Division to Tom Waits to Miles Davis in his acclaimed sets of photographs. Corbijn also directed numerous music videos and music documentaries, but is now active in the world of feature films. His project “Life” is about the relationship between James Dean and “Life” magazine photographer Dennis Stock. Once again, Robert Pattinson defies expectations by appearing not as the screen legend, but as the well-known photographer. “Life” promises to be as visually fascinating as all of Corbijn’s other efforts, including the feature films “Control” and “The American.” Like any upcoming project with Pattinson, it promises to be cinematically interesting as well. 

“Hold on to Me”
“Hold on to Me” stars Robert Pattinson alongside Carey Mulligan, who has a resume packed with critically acclaimed features including “Inside Llewyn Davis,” “Drive” and “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.” The two stars are working with director James Marsh, who is best known for his documentary “Man on Wire.” The plot of this intriguing thriller involves a woman, played by Mulligan, taking advantage of the naivety of Pattinson’s character, a romantic suitor. “Hold on to Me” is scheduled for a 2015 release. 

Robert Pattinson fans have a lot to look forward to in the next year. All of the actor’s upcoming projects look promising, with intriguing plots, formidable casts and some of the best directors in the business. Pattinson has effectively used his “Twilight” fame and stature to begin building one of the most auspicious careers in Hollywood.

What is Pattinson doing with James Dean? 

The shooting of the film have just ended. Now we just have to wait, confidently, the release date in theaters for Life. We expect long lines at the entrance to the theaters because this film, directed by Anton Corbijn (director of Control a biopic on the leader of Joy Division, Ian Curtis), has good chances to irresistibly attract the audience. Especially the female audience. The film tells in fact the very last years of the life of James Dean, one of the most famous, tenacious and fascinating myths from Hollywood. 59 years have passed from his death ( the 24-year-old man ran to his death with his Porsche launched at breakneck speed near Cholame, California). Yet his appearance of a rebel, his pouting mouth as a bored boy, still continues to captivate many girls. 

In Life the Dean role is played by Dane De Haan, blond 28-year-old. He will be also in theaters from April 23 in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, where he plays the role of the friend / enemy of Peter Parker, Harry Osborne (in the previous movie trilogy the same role was played by James Franco, who has curiously also played James Dean in a TV movie in 2001). Dane Dehaan actually is similar at the star of the 50s: dark circles, dark and elusive look. And their names are similar in sound (Dean-De Haan). 

In any case, by now we have more confidence and passion for the other protagonist of the film, the 27 -year-old Robert Pattinson. The former Twilight vampire plays Dennis Stock, Magnum photographer who tighten with the star of Rebel Without a Cause a deep connection both professional and human . In Life the subject is the journey that the two men did from Los Angeles to New York shortly before Dean became a superstar. Along the way, Stock snapped the actor some photos that become mythical , and later published in Life magazine (which is why this is the title chosen for the film ). ” I liked James, but not always, and then work with him was a mess. This photograph is our first publicity shot from the film LIFE that i am currently shooting in Canada and USA. It is the story of James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock, set in early 1955. In the back of the car sits Jimmy as played by Dane DeHaan and in the passenger seat is Dennis, played by Robert Pattinson. Both guys are fantastic and are giving the film very good energy despite the very harsh winter we encountered in Canada.

Dane DeHaan has revealed that he made no attempt to become friends with Robert Pattinson before they started filming Life 

The Amazing Spider-Man actor stars alongside the Twilight heartthrob in Anton Corbijn's drama, focusing on the friendship between Life photographer Dennis Stock (Pattinson) and Hollywood icon James Dean (De Haan). 

"It's an interesting relationship that they have. They do become close in the film, and they do become friends, but they're not friends from the start," he said. 

"So what we did is we didn't try to make any sort of friendship beforehand. We got there and that's when our friendship started. So as it was happening on screen, it was also happening in real life." 

The 28-year-old said they bonded on set, adding: "He's a really nice guy. He's totally chill and he's fun to hang out with, and he's fun to be on set with. We had a great time." 

Sir Ben Kingsley and Joel Edgerton also star in Life, which wrapped shooting on April 1.
"We just finished a week and a half ago," Dane said. 

Life, which is now in post-production, is expected to be released later this year.
