Faire le portrait de Robert Pattinson, c’est pointer du doigt ses paradoxes. Il incarne une figure plus boyish et plus rock'n'roll : c’est la très arty Nan Goldin qui a signé les clichés de la campagne. 

Robert Pattinson : “Je refuse que la peur l'emporte” 

Constat : Robert Pattinson a le charme des grands timides. La tenue ? Un total look passe-muraille (denim et chemise bleu marine). Le regard ? En biais, qui vous observe l’air de rien. Les propos sont hésitants, les doutes et les convictions se percutent. Robert Pattinson affiche la nervosité des fumeurs contrariés – « NO SMOKING », lit-on dans cette chambre luxueuse. 

De sa voix basse, pesant chaque syllabe, l’acteur dit sa nécessité d’opérer un virage à 180 degrés : « Quand vous êtes happé par un phénomène comme Twilight, il est difficile d’imaginer pouvoir exister ensuite autrement dans l’esprit du public. J’ai bien cru ne pas m’en sortir… Un tel succès peut devenir une prison dorée. J’ai conscience d’être à une étape charnière de ma vie. Tous les choix que je fais aujourd’hui définiront à jamais mon avenir. La pression est immense, je me demande constamment : est-ce que tu fais le bon choix ? En même temps, je refuse que la peur l’emporte. » 

Sa mutation, Robert Pattinson l’a entamée dans Cosmopolis, de David Cronenberg, l’an dernier. Avec ce rôle de trader surpuissant qui observe la fin du capitalisme depuis sa limousine, il a accédé à un autre registre. Du sérieux, au risque de déstabiliser ses fans de 12 ans : « Cosmopolis est le film de ma vie. Avant, je ne me considérais pas comme un acteur, même si j’avais dix ans de carrière derrière moi. La malédiction des beaux ? « Les Américains ne connaissent pas vraiment Cannes ou s’en moquent, mais pour un Anglais comme moi, c’est un festival essentiel. Petit, je rêvais devant les images de cet événement et collectionnais les DVD des films primés. À Cannes, tout m’a semblé enfin d’équerre, car j’y étais reconnu par mes pairs. » 

Depuis, « Rob » cherche à se libérer des liens qui entravent les parcours sans risque. Il révèle désormais sa nature d’artiste avec des choix plus audacieux. Ce cinéphile averti, qui compte Jacques Audiard parmi ses réalisateurs favoris, vient de tourner cinq films radicalement différents, du cinéma d’auteur au blockbuster intelligent. Il s’agit de The Rover, un western futuriste du jeune cinéaste australien David Michôd (Animal Kingdom). Puis un biopic sur l’exploratrice Gertrude Bell, Queen of The Desert, dans lequel il incarne Lawrence d’Arabie. On le verra aussi dans Hold on to me, un drame avec Carey Mulligan, puis dans Mission : Blacklist, un thriller psychologique d’Eric Maddox. 

La pression est immense. 

Mais le projet qui le réjouit vraiment est celui qui célèbre ses retrouvailles avec son mentor, David Cronenberg, dont il vient de terminer le tournage de Maps to The Stars, avec Viggo Mortensen et Julianne Moore. « Il m’est arrivé de travailler avec des réalisateurs qui oubliaient en route l’idée même de leur projet. Avec David, on est certain qu’à la fin, il y aura un film et un contenu, ce qui est rare. Après quarante ans de carrière, il continue de se soucier de ce qu’il fait avec la même exigence qu’à ses débuts. J’aimerais lui ressembler plus tard. » 

Robert Pattinson :“J’ai longtemps voulu conserver une vie normale”. 

Présenté comme « satirique et extrême » par le réalisateur canadien, le film pose un regard cynique sur les travers de Hollywood. « C’est une comédie acerbe, noire et franchement drôle, plaide Robert Pattinson. Le sujet évoque combien les actrices et les acteurs peuvent devenir dingues dans cette industrie. C’est rude mais très juste. » Dans un grand éclat de rire, il ajoute : « Évidemment, on parle ici de stars qui ne sont plus de ce monde, n’imaginez pas que cela existe encore ! »
