It was a "Twilight" reunion on the Riviera. 

Both Kellan Lutz and Robert Pattinson were in Cannes this week to promote projects: Pattinson had one film in competition at the film festival and one out of it, while Lutz was around town for his role in "The Expendables 3." 

The two caught up with each other at a party, and in an interview, Lutz bragged on his friend, whose performances in "The Rover" and "Maps to the Stars" are being highlighted by critics. 

"It's great chatting with Rob and seeing his success," Lutz said at a resort outside of Cannes this week. "I think one of the great things talking with Rob after we did 'Twilight' stuff is he just doesn't care about the money. He's doing good work and he wants to work with great directors and great actresses and actors and working with great material, as we all should." 

"I think that the blessing of being part of the 'Twilight' franchise is it's given us this safety net," he added. 

Lutz has taken more action roles, which he calls his passion, since the "Twilight" films wrapped, while Pattinson has gravitated to edgier projects. Lutz said he believes an Academy Award is in Pattinson's future. 

"He has the chops and he's doing what he loves to do and I'm so proud of him for everything that he's doing," he said. 

Another "Twilight" alum, Kristen Stewart, has her film, "Clouds of Sils Maria," premiere here on Friday night; it is in competition.

CANNES: Robert Pattinson Shares His Thoughts on Returning to ‘Twilight’

Whoever worried this year’s Cannes Film Festival was short on stars only needed to take a stroll through the Vanity Fair Party on Saturday night at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, which looked like the Oscars in May

But the actor with the biggest smile on his face may have been Robert Pattinson, who earned some of his best reviews yet for “The Rover,” the Australian action film directed by David Michod which screened to critics over the weekend. He also had strong buzz going into Monday’s competition debut of “Maps to the Stars,” a drama directed by David Cronenberg. 

“He’s incredibly respectful,” Pattinson told Variety, saying he would love to collaborate with Cronenberg again. The two first worked together on 2012′s “Cosmopolis.” 

Pattinson said that he’s getting ready to shoot actor Brady Corbet’s directorial debut, “The Childhood of a Leader.” He added that “Brady is just brilliant.” And Pattinson revealed that he’s been talking to “Spring Breakers” director Harmony Korine about starring in one of his upcoming projects, although the details haven’t been worked out yet. 

Pattinson acknowledged the role of Edward Cullen that made him an international superstar came as a complete surprise. 

“No one thought it was going to be a big deal,” Pattinson said of the 2008 vampire movie. “We thought it was going to be like ‘Thirteen,’” he said, referencing the directorial debut of Catherine Hardwicke. 

“I couldn’t do another ‘Twilight’ movie,” said Pattinson, who is 28. “I’m too old.”

“We have to take it seriously that there are films out there that know how to address a 14 or 15-year-old,” he added. “This is a very special sort of approach and I couldn't do it, yet these films could. I see that much of it is silly but at the same time I respect these films. And I just worked with one of the actors, Robert Pattinson [in Herzog’s upcoming ‘Queen of the Desert’], and he's a wonderful, fine actor. worked in an eyeglass shop in Portland named Visage Eyewear. While I was there, an absolutely adorable British couple came in. We INSTANTLY bonded and I ended up talking with them for close to two hours. About an hour in, I finally asked what brought them to Portland and they told me that they were visiting their son, who was working in town. I asked them what he did for work and they told me he was an actor! “REALLY”, I said. (I get really excited for fellow actors, especially since I know every last one in town), “I’m an actor too!! What’s his name? Is he working on anything at the moment?” That’s when they both got a little quiet, “Oh, he’s working on a movie here…” I took a look at both of them again, took in their accents and it suddenly dawned on me. “Is your son Rob?” I asked. They both got this wide-eyed look on their face like they weren't sure if they should say yes or no. “I JUST worked with him two days ago!” I said, “I loved him, what a great guy!” They both seemed completely relieved that they could tell their secret without having to say anything. After that, we had an even better time and if I remember correctly, they even brought me ice cream from the ice cream shop across the street. For the record, Robert Pattinson has awesome parents!

Last year, your sister Caitlyn was rumored to be dating Robert Pattinson—reports came out saying they were spotted together at a party for Pattinson’s film directed by your dad,Cosmopolis. That must have brought a lot of Antiviral‘s themes especially close to home for you.
[Laughs.] That was totally strange. And then reading how she was going to his apartment at these late hours of the night, and how she was doing all of this crazy stuff with him and breaking Kristen’s [Stewart] heart…it was bizarre to witness that happening and then also witnessing it nothappening while being around my sister.
There were photoshopped magazine covers of them together even though the pictures were taken years apart from each other. [Laughs.] There were people who thought it was true, and they were harassing my sister about it. I was just thinking, “Why?” 

For people who love a guy like Robert Pattinson, they don’t want to hear anything that could ruin whatever image they have of him, and how he lives in some larger-than-their-life way. If they find out that he’s just sitting at home and watching TV right now, and not doing something glamorous, it’d crush them.
Yeah, but in that case they didn’t want it to be true because they have this idea of an amazing romance between him and Kristen Stewart. They want it to mirror their fictional romance, and the fact that my sister was causing problems and playing with his dog really outraged them. [Laughs.] And it was based on nothing. 

And then when Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart broke up for real, the comments sections of so many Tumblr pages were filled with truly disturbing messages about how devastated these fans were about it, as if they’re parents just got divorced. It got really intense.
It’s crazy. That’s the thing: It’s actually insanity at some point. If you respect someone on a really high level and they happen to be famous, but your respect comes from appreciating their work, that’s totally fine. There’s a certain point where I think it’s a legitimate form of insanity, and it’sthat point where you think you have a relationship with this person who’s never met you. That’s delusional, and it was interesting to explore that idea in how the fans in Antiviral will go so far as being injected with their favorite celebrity’s diseases in order to be closer to them in some way.

For starters, we asked Stephenie her standout memories of the “Twilight” cast. “One of the first is when I first visited the set and I went out to dinner,” she began. “I hadn’t met anyone in the cast. They were coming from dinner and they were delayed. They came straight from a gallery shoot where they were all in character costume, make-up… the whole bit. So the first time I met them, they were dressed up like my imaginary friends. That’s not something you get every day.”

Stephenie again laughed heartily as she recalled her unforgettable first meeting with Robert Pattinson. “When Rob and I first met, we had lunch together [and] talked about the script. We sat there and argued for a solid hour and a half about the Edward character. And he was really sure I was wrong [in parts]. I was telling him, ‘This is how Edward feels…’ He said, ‘No, this is how he feels here.’ We went back and forth [that way]. It was hilarious and fun.”
