Western de fin du monde, « The Rover » (« le vagabond »), projeté hors compétition, se déroule dans le bush australien. Mais si le film fait sensation sur la Croisette, c'est grâce à son casting hollywoodien : Guy Pearce (« L.A. Confidential ») et Robert Pattinson, la star de « Twilight », y jouent des hommes sans foi ni loi, qui luttent pour survivre.
Nous avons rencontré hier l'ex-compagnon de Kristen Stewart, 28 ans, également à Cannes pour « Map to the Stars », du Canadien David Cronenberg.
On ne vous attendait pas dans « The Rover » (sortie le 4 juin), ce road-trip violent du réalisateur australien David Michôd...ROBERT PATTINSON. Moi, non plus... Depuis que j'ai achevé la saga « Twilight », j'ai beaucoup de chance. Vous ne pouvez pas imaginer le nombre de scénarios intéressants que je reçois, comme « The Rover ». J'avais adoré « Animal Kingdom », le précédent film de David Michôd. Aussi, lorsqu'il m'a proposé le personnage de Rey, ce jeune Américain grièvement blessé par des militaires, abandonné dans le désert, qui se retrouve face à un fermier australien aigri et renfermé que joue Guy Pearce, j'ai foncé dans l'aventure. C'est un face-à-face impitoyable !
Le tournage a été difficile dans le bush australien ?Formidable au contraire ! On a passé sept semaines dans des régions superbes, sauvages, éloignées de toute civilisation. On était à neuf heures de voiture d'Adélaïde. Entre nous, sans portable, sans télé, etc. Et sans paparazzis ! C'était une autre vie, au fin fond du désert. Cette ambiance inhumaine se ressent dans le film, cette impression de fin du monde à la « Mad Max ».
Vous êtes aussi à Cannes avec « Map to the Stars »...Je crois que je ferais tous les films de Cronenberg s'il me le demandait. Deux ans après « Cosmopolis », où mon personnage vivait en permanence dans sa grosse limousine, cela m'a amusé qu'il me confie le rôle d'un chauffeur de stars à Hollywood. C'est un rôle secondaire, mais ô combien important, au côté de la grande Julianne Moore.
Pour un acteur de votre stature, Hollywood, ça signifie quoi ?Une sorte de bûcher des vanités. Un endroit féroce, dur, plein de fric, où les ego et jalousies sont terriblement exacerbés. Où tout le monde veut être célèbre à tout prix. C'est très, très dur d'y vivre. Surtout, si vous n'avez pas un entourage professionnel sérieux et de vrais amis pour vous préserver de toutes les tentations. Moi, je m'en sors bien. Je réussis à vivre ma vie personnelle et la célébrité. Sans doute parce que j'en connais les dangers et les pièges...
« Twilight », c'est bel et bien fini...Ah oui ! C'est bel et bien fini ! Je suis trop vieux maintenant pour jouer les vampires ! Il y a tellement de réalisateurs avec lesquels je veux absolument travailler.
Lesquels ?Brady Corbet, un jeune metteur en scène qui va me diriger dans « The Childhood of a Leader », Harmony Korine (« Spring Breakers ») bientôt. Et le Français Olivier Assayas pour un film de gangsters que je tournerai à la fin de l'année aux Etats-Unis. J'espère aussi un jour Quentin Tarantino...
